A simple guide to natural stone tiles

Escaping the jungle of the tile world is easy… when you have the right tools.

In the last blog we looked at the ways that planning and discussing your look and ideas can help you find the right tile, the next few weeks we will be unearthing the product for you.

Selecting the right product is about understanding the product itself – how it fits in with your lifestyle and if they are fit for purpose. We are going to take you on a journey of natural stone tiles, if you have any questions about natural stone-always ask!

Natural stone tiles can be referred to as; limestone, travertine, marble, granite and bluestone (to name a few – and being the most popular). Each are suited to different purposes but in a nutshell – all natural stone products are porous and do require sealing (and the appropriate adhesives). There is a natural variation within natural stone that creates that unique and individual look and this occurs within each batch – to us this to us is the beauty of having natural stone!

Create a natural flow of space by using the same natural stone on the walls and floors. The vertical and horizontal application of bluestone creates a simple and elegant space!

Natural stone can come in various sizes, shapes and thicknesses. Consider the thickness of the material for set-downs and if you are using natural stone for wall features (internally or externally).

There is also a range of finishes you can choose from:

polished- a glossy, shiny look-that emphasises the colours and natural patterns and veining

honed- is a matt, smooth finish that provides a natural (non-reflective) finish

sandblasted- is a textured finish and changes the look and feature of the original colour

sawn (for bluestone)- a slightly textured finish with a soft pattern that is created within the process

unfilled (travertine)- a natural process where the travertine has holes or pitting in the surface

filled (travertine)- where the pitting or holes of unfilled travertine have been filled in to create a smooth surface

The colour and pattern consistency within natural stone can vary – this is a part of the elements of natural stone, it is individual and creates its own contrasts. There are also different pattern types as; veined or cross cut. Also keep in mind that natural stone, especially outside – will also change and vary over time.

Vein cut silver travertine tiles-the natural colour variation creates a distinct and unique feature for this internal entrance hall wall.

On-going maintenance is required with natural stone – you will need to re-seal (how long exactly depends on the sealer you use) and we recommend using cleaning products that are made specifically for natural stone.

So where can you use natural stone? Each product can be suited for indoor and outdoor use – it is the finish that will determine where and how you can use the product. Consider natural stone for:

Feature walls (internal and external),

Fireplace feature wall,

Blade walls – Columns,

Splashbacks,

Walls and Floors and

Driveways…. really just about anywhere if you love it!

Have a chat with us about natural stone and the different applications – as you do need to consider slip ratings, thicknesses, finishes or mechanical fixing (if it is relevant to how you are using the product). Natural stone can be used in commercial, retail and residential areas.

Natural stone can truly be the most beautiful feature, it is timeless, elegant and uniquely yours.
